Jesus In 2 Samuel … Eternal One … April 23, 2017
And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever. 2 Samuel 7:16 ESV
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Luke 1: 31-33 ESV
In an age of immediate gratification, is it hard to imagine eternity and waiting upon the Lord’s return? However, Christians are to do so because they believe that God is eternal. We are told how to do so in various scriptures in order to be a witnesses of all that we believe. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 ESV ….. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6: 11b -12 ESV …. These are just two of many passages instructing us how we are to live as Christians. We believe every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord, to the Glory of God. (Philippians 2:9-11 … Romans 14:11)
The Throne Established:
But of the Son he says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. Hebrews 1:8 ESV Revelation teaches of the throne of God and of worshipping day and night, acknowledging that he is forever. And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty -four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:9-11 ESV
Jesus, the Son of The Most High Given the Throne:
The sovereign God of the universe gave the throne to Jesus, his Son. God appointed David as king and promised his kingdom would carry on forever. (2 Samuel 7:16) God accomplished this promise through his only begotten Son. (Luke 1:31-33)
His Kingdom will Be Eternal:
Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you King of the Jews?” John 18:33 ESV …. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” John 18: 36a ESV Jesus was offered all the kingdoms of this world if he would worship Satan, but the kingdoms of this world were not that for which he came. (Luke 4:6-8) Paul, when going through many difficult times, knew where his final destination would be. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. 2 Timothy 4:18 ESV Paul could say that because he knew that Jesus’s kingdom was eternal. Could a dead king have spoken to him on the road to Damascus? Paul no doubt believed the lies that Jesus’s body was stolen by his followers, but no more. Not after the Damascus road. Paul probably would have sung the songs we sing today, had they been written. Songs such as, “The King is Coming,” “I Serve a Risen Savior,” or “Because He lives.”
Christian, we sing the songs to an everlasting / eternal King on a throne that will never end. Let us be grateful for a kingdom of which we are a part. Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. Hebrews 12:28 ESV
